Springtime Dog Treat Recipes (as seen on SA Live 3/8)

Here are some fast and easy baked treats you're loyal canine companions will love this Spring!

Berry Tarts

Crust ingredients:

  • 3 cups Flour
  • 2 cups shortening
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup oats

Filling ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1/2 cup strawberries
  • 1/2 cup raspberries
  • 1 cup oats
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tsp cinnamon 
  • Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In stand mixer or large bowl, add flour, oats, and shortening. Mix well. Add water and mix the ingredients until a firm dough forms.If needed, add water in increments of 1/2 cup until dough is firm but not sticky.. Once dough is formed, roll it out to about 1/4 inch thick. Use flower cookie cutter that is at least 4 inches wide and cut 6 pieces. Spray a regular size muffin pan with cooking spray and place the flower cutouts inside the muffin cups of the pan and press them down forming tart crusts. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes.

While the tart crusts are in the oven, make the filling by adding in the blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and oats in a bowl and stir well. Then add honey and cinnamon and mix well. When pie crusts are baked, add berry filling to the tart crusts and bake for 15 minutes. Let the tarts cool down for 15 minutes then they are ready to serve to your canine companions.

 

Flower Berry Cookies

Crust ingredients:

  • 3 cups Flour

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup oats

Filling ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1/2 cup strawberries
  • 1/2 cup raspberries
  • 1 cup oats
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tsp cinnamon 

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In stand mixer or large bowl, add in flour, oats, and shortening and mix well. Add water and mix the ingredients until a firm dough forms. If needed, add water in increments of 1/2 cup until dough is firm but not sticky. Once dough is formed, roll out to about 1/4 inch thick. Use a flower cookie cutter that is at least 4 inch wide and cut out 8 pieces. Make the filling by adding blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and oats in a bowl and stir well. Add honey and cinnamon and mix well. Place 2 tablespoons of filling in the center of 4 flower cut outs. Place the other flower cut outs on top of the filling matching up the petals to the bottom flower and press down on each petal with a fork. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes. Let cool and then let your pups enjoy!
