SAN ANTONIO -A handful of businesses stretching several downtown blocks opened their temporary doors Tuesday along East Houston Street.

The city’s Center City Development Office is putting on the event to offer unique holiday shopping to both locals and tourists.

The shops are located along East Houston between Soledad and Jefferson.

“Oh, I think its phenomenal,” said Esther Foster, whose daughter owns PAWSitively Sweet Bakery, one of the shops located at 140 E. Houston. “It allows small businesses to get out and do something a little different from the standard.”

The bakery offers homemade dog treats, collars, doggie clothes and décor.

A wine bar and art gallery next door have been set up by two women who own Vinously Speaking and Fresh Urban Flowers.

Brooke Harris, who owns Fresh Urban Flowers, says the pop up idea is a great opportunity for small businesses to take advantage of prime real estate they might not be able to afford.

“With the city working with the landlords and us to get in here, we can feel what it's like,” said Harris. “We have goals to strive for, we can figure out how we can do it in the future.”

A book titled “Downtown San Antonio” is also on sale at the wine bar and art gallery.

The shops will be open through Dec. 21 on Tuesdays from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from noon until 9 p.m.

“I’m sure they'll just be bigger and better,” said co-author Joan Korte. “And tonight is a good example of how much fun everybody can have.”

Carolers, free gift wrapping and pictures with Santa are also part of the event.
